In 2021, MNML Inc. partnered with Cardiosense, a startup leveraging non-invasive sensors and AI to build the next generation of cardiac monitoring. The MNML team was asked to design a new medical device that is placed on the chest and worn by patients outside the hospital. This wearable heart monitor logs data via multiple onboard sensors and provides critical information to doctors previously only available within the hospital setting.

Role: I worked closely with MNML's Design Director Ishmael Adams and Lead Engineer Gary Paulsen to create and develop the housing design. I sketched, 3D modeled, and produced final renders & mockups for this product. In 2022, Cardiosense raised $15.1 million in series A financing.

Placement

The device is placed on the sternum at an angle using two electrode pads.

Functions

Despite its small size, Cardiosense is able to measure blood pressure, heart & respiratory rate, skin temperature, and much more.

Sensors

Two replaceable electrodes flank a cluster of sensors in the center. This cluster forms a mesa that echoes the precise square shape of the electrodes.

Development

A range of designs were explored, from round to square. The final design was a mixture of the two, a soft pebble like form that feels smooth and organic.

Data Logging

Information captured on the device is logged and can be reviewed in an online dashboard, providing information to doctors previously only available within the hospital setting.
